The definition of the word clarity is ‘the quality of being clear.’ In my one on one coaching practice, I find that clarity is the missing piece for most of my clients. They don’t know what they want; They have not thought about it. What is in front of them is what they have, and taking the time to dream or envision their lives is not something they spend much time on. I heard someone say that we all have a default future or a desired future. The default future happens without any effort on our part. The desired future is a life based on a vision of what you want your future to look like.
When I started working with a coach over five years ago, she asked me what I wanted in my life. I remember giggling out of nervousness because I had no clue. I had reached a level of success and happiness, and I guess I thought “this is it; This is my future. “
Through coaching, I started to get clear about what I truly wanted. That list included: to be part of a small community; to live near water; to do work that lights me up; and to make a difference somehow. My vision seemed unrealistic to me at the time. How would I ever be able to make that happen? I started to put up barriers to why this wasn’t feasible for me. My coach kept challenging me to ask the question – why can’t you have that? What is your next step?
Last night, I was sitting in my beach house in Ocean Springs, MS and realized that clarity is a big part of the reason that I am here. All of what seemed impossible five years ago is now my life today. It was not a straight path, but I ended up where I said I wanted to be. My journey has not been without stumbling blocks; I don’t want to imply that all of this was easy. It was a process of letting go of things that no longer served me — of challenging myself to take on new training and education. However, once, I got clear – things just started shifting. We found this beach house four years ago and decided to buy it. I started coaching training and speaking more. Today, I have created that vision for my life. I believe we all can.
Your vision will be different from mine. That is ok! You might want to retire or spend more time with family, work part-time, or change jobs. All of that can happen once you see it and say it out loud. There is research that when you get clear about what you want, the universe or God steps up to help you create it.
I believe that what you focus on expands. So, if you have clarity, you automatically start to see opportunity and question the status quo in your life.
The saying, “if you don’t know where you are headed, any road will get you there” is true.
