Looking Back – Looking Forward

a large tree in a forest

I like to take some time in the craziness of December to first look back over the past year and then look forward to the new year.

This gives me perspective and appreciation for what was accomplished instead of focusing on what I didn’t get done. My practice is easy and it is a great exercise to appreciate the past year and to anticipate what will matter in the next one.  I hope you will take the time to do the exercise below for yourself.
Let’s get started …

Grab a blank sheet of paper. Next, draw a tree trunk with some branches coming off the trunk. On the tree trunk, write the current year (2019.) On two different branches, write professional and personal. Then, add some smaller branches that speak to you – fun, relationships, self-care, health, finances or anything that bubbles up.

Now, the fun part – start adding the leaves. On the leave, write the things you did in that area of your life. Like, under personal – you might have exercised consistently; gotten monthly massages; spent time with friends; lost weight; meditated regularly.

Keep adding leaves as you think of things that mattered in the past year.

Now on to the new year — new paper, new tree! The trunk is 2020 and the branches are the same. The next part is what you would like to manifest this next year on each branch.

Keep them both in a place that you can review them periodically. The 2020 tree is the dream tree for this coming year. I suggest that monthly you take about 20-30 minutes and review the dream tree and write down action steps that month that will create those dreams.

For me, I have found power in manifesting what I want by writing it down on paper. The act solidifies it in my brain and starts to make it happen. Now, let’s be honest – I don’t get everything on the dream tree but I believe I get more of it than if I did not write it down at all. Maybe, I am just aware of what I wanted and then recognize it when it happens. This is the act of appreciation. Appreciating the things that do happen, the moments of peace and laughter that I did have and the successes that I had as well.

There aren’t dream leaves that are too silly or too much about stuff. If you really want a certain car – write it down. That wouldn’t make my list but it might make yours. If you want to make a certain amount of money – write it down. If you want a certain house – write it down. Don’t censor your dreams because they are too big.

May 2020 be the year that things start to happen in your life that make you feel more confident, strong and purposeful.

In January I will be asking you to pick your word of the year. By being intentional you can change the focus and the results of your year.

What are some of the things on your 2020 tree?
